Lake Balaton - our precious 'sea'
Lake Balaton is a relatively young formation, it was formed by tectonic forces 12,000-20,000 years ago. Lake Balaton is the largest lake in Central Europe, its mean depth is only 3,2 m, its surface area is 593 square meter. The southern shore of the lake consists of sandy beaches, while on the northern shore there are mountains of volcanic origin with vineyards on their slopes. These rich vineyards produce an assortment of excellent wines that go very well with the delicious local food.
The picturesque landscape and the water ideal for swimming and other water sports. The Lake has a silky green-yellow water, the southern shore is more ideal for small children because of the shallow water. On the north shore the water gets deeper immediatelly. The summer water temperature of around 80 F, it is warmer than the air in the morning. The water and the silky mud of the lake are very good for nervous complaints, anemia and nervous fatigue. Children love and enjoy very much the paddling and splashing in the Lake. Young people talk of the „great parties" of dancing all through the hot nights. Hikers and nature lovers speak of the idyllic place of the Upper-Balaton. Painters and photographers affirm that the finest panoramas in Hungary are given by the hills around the Lake. Wine lovers praise the wines of Badacsony and gourmets that of grilled pike-perch.
From the hills of Bakony you can enjoy the beautiful view of the Lake, which awaits holiday-makers with innumerable beaches, as well as sport facilities including sailing or bob.
You have an opportunity to go fishing, sitting in the reeds by the shore and waiting for pike-perches, carps or razor-fish to catch. Also take to water to sail or go on a cruise on the Lake visiting places from Siófok to Balatonföldvár or just go for a short trip to taste the tasty wine of this area.
Although the peak season at the lake is summer, the lovers of Balaton think that is also worth visiting the huge Lake in winter, when you can go fishing in the ice-holes, or brave visitors can even skate, sledge or ice-sail on the Lake.
If you fancy for some real relaxation, head to one of the region's spa towns. The curative thermal lake at Hévíz remains warm even in deepest winter, you can soak outdoors as the snow falls around you. The thermal centres and aqua parks at Kehidakustány and Zalakaros are also open whatever the season, and are suitable for the whole family. In the world of the Balaton, with its multitude of possibilities, everyone can plan their personal vacation tailored to their own desires and interests.
