Vaginoplasty

Vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to improve the tone of the vagina by tightening the vaginal muscles and supporting tissues. The surgery is generally performed on women who have experienced childbirth, but it may also be performed to revise abnormalities or repair the vaginal area following disease or injury. Vaginoplasty may be combined with other rejuvenative procedures such as labiaplasty and hymenoplasty.

The surgery

The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and it usually takes 1 to 2 hours. The surgeon joins the stretched muscles at the back of the vagina and shortens with dissolvable stitches; the unwanted skin is then removed. This tightens vaginal muscles and surrounding soft tissues through the reduction of excess vaginal lining. The decrease in the diameter of the vagina and the increased tightness of the vaginal muscles are noticeable right after the surgery.  The scarring is inside the vagina.

After surgery

Recovery is quite quick after vaginoplasty. Patients are normally able to return to work about 1 week after the surgery and to sexual activities within 4 to 6 weeks.

They may be sore and swollen after the surgery but usually able to walk comfortably within a few days.

Complications and risks

Like all surgical procedures, vaginoplasty also carries the possibilities of some complications including infection, anaesthetic complications, scars, nerve damage, swelling, bleeding, haematoma, wound separation and delayed healing. Some patients experience changes in sensation and pain during intercourse.

You can avoid most complications by choosing the right surgeon and following pre- and postoperative instructions.
